4-Day Desert Tour from Casablanca to Marrakech

Your driver meets you in arrivals at Casablanca Mohammed V Airport, or at your hotel, and heads southeast at once. The Atlantic plain gives way to rolling farmland around Khemisset, then the road begins to climb — the first hint of the Middle Atlas ahead, the temperature dropping as it does.

Stop in Ifrane, the alpine-style town Moroccans call "Little Switzerland," for lunch in the cool mountain air. Then into the cedar forests of Azrou, home to some of the oldest trees in North Africa, where wild Barbary macaques come down to the roadside — the first of many photo stops.

The road runs south across the high plateau between the Middle and High Atlas to Midelt, an apple-growing town beneath the peaks of Jbel Ayachi. Check into Hotel Taddart — ensuite rooms, AC, a traditional Moroccan dinner — and an early night before the desert.

After breakfast, the road climbs the Tizi n'Talremt pass and then drops into the Ziz Valley: a ribbon of thousands of date palms, fortified villages, and red cliffs winding south toward the Sahara. Photo stops at the panoramic viewpoints above the gorge and at the palm groves near Errachidia.

Lunch in Erfoud, famous for its fossil workshops where ancient marine creatures are cut and polished from the desert rock. Between Erfoud and Rissani, stop at the ancient khettara channels — underground tunnels that carried water beneath the Tafilalet oasis for centuries, their vents dotting the desert like a row of craters. Then on to Merzouga, where the dunes rise on the horizon.

Mount your camel at the edge of the erg and ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes as the sun drops — about an hour at a slow, rocking pace, the sand shifting from gold to rose. Your luxury desert camp waits among the dunes: a private ensuite tent with a real bed, hot shower, quality linens, and electricity. Moroccan dinner under the stars, Berber drumming around the campfire, and a sky with almost no light pollution.

Wake before dawn for the sunrise camel ride back over the dunes — the desert silent, the first light spreading across the sand. Breakfast at camp, then drive to Rissani, the historic caravan town and birthplace of Morocco's Alaouite dynasty, for its dates market and the gateways of the old ksar.

Continue to the Tinghir oasis and walk the palm-lined riverbank with a local guide — mud-brick villages, irrigation channels, goat herders on the slopes. Then into Todra Gorge, where sheer limestone walls rise 300 metres above a flat, walkable riverbed. Time on the canyon floor before lunch at the gorge.

Drive the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs into the Dades Valley, its red-rock walls and the "Monkey Fingers" formations glowing in the late light. Arrive at Hotel Babylon before sunset — a private ensuite room, a hot shower, and dinner overlooking the valley.

Drive through the Valley of the Roses, fragrant in April and May, and the Skoura oasis, one of Morocco's largest palm groves. Visit Kasbah Amridil, a perfectly restored private museum of Berber architecture, then continue to Ouarzazate, the "Hollywood of Africa."

Visit the iconic ksar of Aït Ben Haddou — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the backdrop of Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Cross the river with a guide, wander the earthen alleyways, and climb to the granary for the panorama. Lunch nearby.

Cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260m), Morocco's highest paved crossing, the afternoon sun throwing long shadows across the valleys. Arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon, with drop-off at your hotel or riad — four days from the airport to the dunes and over the mountains.
