4-Day Desert Tour from Agadir to Merzouga

Pickup from your Agadir hotel or Taghazout area at 07:30 AM. The road runs east across the Souss plain — orange groves, argan trees, the Anti-Atlas rising ahead — and climbs to Taliouine, Morocco's saffron capital. At a local cooperative you'll see how the crocus threads are picked and dried, and buy the world's most expensive spice at source. Continue through Taznakht, the carpet-weaving town, with lunch along the way.

The first great sight of the trip: the UNESCO-listed ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, a fortified earthen village that Hollywood keeps returning to — Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia. Cross the riverbed, wander the alleyways, and climb to the granary for the panorama. Then a brief stop in Ouarzazate, the "Hollywood of Africa," at the Taourirt Kasbah, the former Glaoui stronghold with its painted cedar ceilings.

The Road of a Thousand Kasbahs leads east into the Dades Valley, its red-rock walls glowing in the late light. Arrive at Hotel Babylon before dark — a private ensuite room, a hot shower, and a traditional Moroccan dinner after a full first day.

After breakfast, drive to Tinghir and walk the palm-lined riverbank with a local guide — mud-brick villages, irrigation channels, goat herders on the slopes. Then into Todra Gorge, where sheer limestone walls rise 300 metres above a flat, walkable riverbed. Time on the canyon floor before lunch at the gorge.

The landscape flattens into stony plateau as you head east. Pass Rissani, the historic caravan town and birthplace of Morocco's ruling Alaouite dynasty, and Erfoud, famous for its fossil workshops. By mid-afternoon the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi rise on the horizon and you reach Merzouga, where your camels are waiting.

Ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes as the sun drops — about an hour at a slow, rocking pace, the sand shifting from gold to rose. Your luxury ensuite camp waits among the dunes: a private tent with a real bed, hot shower, and quality linens. Moroccan dinner under the stars, Berber drumming around the campfire, and a sky with almost no light pollution.

Wake before dawn for the sunrise camel ride — the desert silent and cold, the first light spreading across the sand. Back at camp, a Moroccan breakfast of fresh bread, msemen, and coffee, then your driver is ready for the road west.

Head southwest to Zagora, then drive the Draa Valley — Morocco's longest river oasis, stretching north toward Agdez. Hundreds of thousands of date palms, fortified kasbahs, and Berber villages. Lunch in Zagora or along the valley.

Arrive at Hara Oasis in Agdz, a boutique guesthouse of traditional Berber architecture set inside a palm grove. After two days of desert, the sound of birds and running water is the point. Dinner at the guesthouse, and a quiet night under the palms.

Breakfast in the palm grove, then the climb over the Tizi n'Tinififft pass and west along the mountain road to Taznakht. Stop at a carpet cooperative, where Ouaouzguite women weave the rugs the town is known for — buy at source, or simply watch the looms.

Continue west through the mountains and down into the Souss to Taroudant, a walled market town ringed by seven kilometres of ochre ramparts. Lunch inside the medina, a walk along the walls and through the artisan souk, and any last souvenirs.

The final stretch runs down the Souss plain toward the coast. Arrive in Agadir by late afternoon with drop-off at your hotel — four days, one Sahara night, one oasis night, and not a single road driven twice.
