Shared 2-Day Marrakech to Zagora Desert Tour

The minibus collects the group from Marrakech hotels and riads around 07:30 AM — an early start means the mountain crossing happens in cool morning air. The road climbs southeast into the High Atlas Mountains, past terraced Berber villages, walnut and almond groves, and switchbacks with views that stretch for kilometres. Photo stop at the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m), Morocco's highest paved crossing — then the descent into the pre-Saharan south begins.

First big reward of the day: UNESCO-listed Aït Ben Haddou, the fortified earthen village that stood in for Yunkai in Game of Thrones and the desert city of Gladiator. Cross the riverbed, wander the alleyways, and climb to the granary at the top for the panorama — an optional local guide (about €3) brings the ksar's history to life. Continue to Ouarzazate, Morocco's film capital, for lunch at a local restaurant (own expense).

South of Ouarzazate the road crosses the Tizi n'Tinififft pass through bare, folded Anti-Atlas foothills — then drops into green. This is the Draa Valley, Morocco's longest oasis: a ribbon of hundreds of thousands of date palms running beneath the jagged wall of Jbel Kissane, with mud-brick kasbahs like Tamnougalt and fields of henna, barley, and corn along the roadside. The group stops for photos and mint tea before the final stretch to Zagora.

Arrive in Zagora in the late afternoon and meet your camels. The group sets off together on a sunset trek across the desert — about an hour at a slow, rocking pace, the light turning gold and then rose over the hamada and dunes. Your Berber desert camp is waiting with tea on arrival and your own private tent. Dinner is a shared Moroccan tagine, then Tam-Tam drumming around the campfire — the night usually ends with the group stretched out on the rugs, counting shooting stars.

Wake in the dark for the sunrise camel ride — the desert silent, the first light creeping across the sand. It's the moment most travellers say they remember longest. Back at camp, a Moroccan breakfast of bread, msemen, jam, and coffee, then the group boards the minibus around 09:00 for the journey north.

The Draa Valley looks different in morning light — the palms brighter, the kasbahs sharper against the rock. Back in Ouarzazate, the group visits the Taourirt Kasbah, the former stronghold of the Glaoui clan, with its maze of painted ceilings and carved cedar. Lunch at a local restaurant (own expense).

Cross the High Atlas once more via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, this time with the afternoon sun throwing long shadows across the valleys. Arrive back in Marrakech in the early evening (typically 6–7 PM). The driver drops the group at hotels and riads — two days, one Sahara night, and usually a few new friends.
