The riad

A little Andalusian house in the heart of the blue city.

Riad Gharnata is a small, charming riad in the heart of Chefchaouen’s blue medina, a few steps from Place Outa El Hammam. It’s traditional Moroccan-Andalusian through and through — zellij tilework, carved-wood ceilings, stained glass, and a peaceful inner courtyard with a little fountain, where a glass of mint tea welcomes you in.

The heart of the place is up top: two rooftop terraces with 360-degree views over the blue town, the old medina and the Rif mountains all around — a lovely spot for sunset and the stars. There’s an on-site restaurant, and breakfast is served in the courtyard or on the roof.

Before you go

Arriving ready

Pack a warm layer

Chefchaouen sits up in the Rif and gets cold at night — the rooms have heating, but bring something warm for the terraces.

Head up to the terrace

The two rooftop terraces are the highlight — 360° views over the blue town and the Rif, perfect for sunset and stargazing.

Some cash

The riad takes cards, but small cash is handy for the medina's shops, cafés and tips.

Comfortable shoes

The blue medina is steep and cobbled, and the riad has stairs — comfortable shoes make it all easier.

Wander the blue city

Outa El Hammam Square, the Ras El Ma spring and the photogenic blue alleys are all a short walk away.

Climb for the view

The Spanish Mosque viewpoint is a lovely walk up for sunset over the whole blue city.
