The hotel
A family-run hotel with its feet in the sand, at the foot of the highest dunes in Morocco.
Auberge du Sud — the Café du Sud — is a family-run hotel set right at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga, the highest dunes in Morocco. It’s one of the oldest addresses in the desert: the family has welcomed travellers here since the 1980s, and the whole place is built and decorated in true Saharan style, with the great dunes rising straight from the doorstep.
The rooms are air-conditioned with private bathrooms, and some open onto a terrace with the sand at your feet. There’s a swimming pool with one of the finest dune views you’ll find, a restaurant serving generous Moroccan buffets, a spa, and dinner served out near the sand with traditional music under the stars.
